Plot:Michael, a gangster recently released from prison, finds peace helping a young widow run a small hotel in Macao. One stormy night Karl, a policeman with a score to settle with Michael shows up.
Overview:A bad-tempered customer, Michael (Lau Ching Wan), arrives at a small Macau hotel one stormy night. Despite his rudeness, the hotel owner Suet (Ruby Wong) takes good care of him. A triad member just released from jail, Michael has beaten up the taxi driver who brought him to the hotel in the first place. He is soon tracked down by the driver's brother-in-law who happens to be a police sergeant. Suet, herself a young widow, soon learns from her son that it was the taxi driver who hit Michael first and so she goes to the police station to reveal the truth. Much against his will, the police sergeant is forced to release Michael. Before his spell behind bars, Michael had been a wealthy 'big brother' and now that he has been released many of his triad associates owe him a lot of money. But when he tries to get it back, Michael finds himself unable to show the necessary aggression to force the gangsters to pay up. He also feels that he has ruined his girlfriend's life even though she dumps him and runs off with most of his money. Suet begins to see that underneath his brash exterior Michael is essentially a good man, but for the sake of her son she hides her growing romantic feelings for Michael. Portraying the world of men has always been a strength of director Johnny To, and with Where A Good Man Goes he has succeeded in discovering the importance of a stable family life.
