Germany, 1961. This is the true story of Hasso Herschel, who along with three friends spent a harrowing nine months digging a 145 meter tunnel under the Berlin Wall from West to East Berlin to free his beloved sister.
Overview:
"The Tunnel" brings us back to the divided Germany of 1961. By order of the Soviet government, a wall was to be built between the Soviet satellite city of East Berlin and the democratically controlled West Berlin to stem the rising tide of fleeing refugees. As a result, many families were broken up and loved ones lost.
This is the true story of Hasso Herschel, who along with three friends spent a harrowing nine months digging a 145 meter tunnel under the Berlin Wall from West to East Berlin to free his beloved sister. Because of Herschel's daring plan, a total of 29 people were reunited with their loved ones in West Berlin. In exchange for their financial cooperation in the building of the tunnel, NBC broadcast the riveting images of the tunnel excavation and escape to millions of viewers worldwide.
"The Tunnel" presents an inspiring illustration of how, in the face of oppression, the hope and buoyancy of the human spirit cannot be caged. It is a story about the heroic life-or-death fight for freedom, of those willing to face severe hardship and peril for the sake of those they love.
