URGENT NOTE: The picture and sound quality and the English subtitles on Mei Ah's Kurosawa DVDs are horrible. Apparently the Japanese dialogue was translated into Chinese, then the Chinese translated into English. We cannot accept returns for complaints of this nature. Please do not purchase these DVDs if you will be unhappy with their poor quality.
Yuzo and his fiancee Masako spend their Sunday together, trying to have a good time on just 35 yen. They manage to have many small adventures, especially because Masako's optimism and belief in dreams is able to lift Yuzo from his realistic despair.
Overview:
Early Kurosawa feature about a man, Yuzo, and his fiance, Masako, who want to spend an enjoyable afternoon out, even though it is cold and rainy and they have very little money. Feeling all but defeated after a number of failed attempts at leisure, Yuzo turns to conducting an imaginary orchestra, to little avail. Stylistically daring, with the seeds of Kurosawa's later work evident, this was his first and only foray into shomin-geki, the 1930s-40s Japanese drama of the common man.
